How to buy and sell ETFs

The process of buying and selling ETFs is a very simple process, and is exactly the same as that for shares.

ETFs can be purchased and sold at any time during the ASX trading day through a stockbroker. As stated before, trading takes place from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Sydney time. If you currently own an existing share brokerage account, then there is no requirement to open a separate trading account.

To buy and sell ETFs in Australia, you will need to follow these steps:

  • Open a brokerage account: You will need to open an account with a broker that offers ETF trading. Some popular brokers in Australia include CommSec, IG and Saxo Capital Markets.

  • Research ETFs: Before buying or selling ETFs, it is important to research the ETFs you are interested in. Look at their performance, fees and the underlying assets they hold.

  • Place an order: Once you have selected the ETFs you want to buy or sell, you can place an order with your broker. You can place an order to buy or sell at the current market price or set a limit order at a specific price.

  • Wait for execution: Your order will be executed when the market conditions are met. You will receive confirmation of the trade, along with the details of the price and number of shares purchased or sold.

  • Monitor your investment: It is important to monitor your ETFs and make adjustments to your portfolio as needed. You can track the performance of your ETFs and make trades as needed.
